Akwamu Gorge Islet – The Hidden Gorge Gem in Ghana

Akwamu Gorge Islet – The Hidden Gorge Gem in Ghana

If you are looking for a hidden gem in Ghana, look no further than Akwamu Gorge Islet. Located in the eastern part of the country, this islet is a natural wonder that is sure to take your breath away. Getting to Akwamu Gorge Islet can be a bit of a challenge, but it is well worth the effort. It is a two-hour drive from Accra to Akwamu Gorge. Once you arrive at the islet, you will have to hike for about an hour through the lush rainforest to reach the gorge.

Hike Experience on Akwamu Gorge Islet

I have been to Akosombo many times and on each occasion, I fail to take the hike. My travel itinerary to Akosombo included hiking on the Akwamu Gorge Islet. I was excited about it and envisioned myself on top with the picturesque postcard. You can walk on the Adome Bridge to the destination or board a taxi if you do not have private transportation. Our guide was very friendly as he welcomed us.

But trust me, the journey is worth it. As you make your way through the forest, you will be surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of exotic birds. When you finally arrive summit the Gorge you see the beautiful backdrop of the iconic Adome Bridge.

But the real highlight of Akwamu Gorge Islet is the hike through the gorge itself. The hike is challenging, but it is also rewarding. As you make your way through the gorge, you will be surrounded by towering cliffs and stunning rock formations.

There are rest stops when you get to the flat surface. Our guide encouraged us to rest as it was just the three of us on the tour. You can take your videos and pictures yourself or ask the tour guide for assistance. Make sure to respectfully direct the guide on how to take your pictures and check them before you descend. The hike was very relaxing as I had a sense of peace and tranquillity in the forest.

How Much Does It Cost to Hike?

It is advisable to book your hike in advance. Unlike Afadjato and other hiking trails, the tour guides are not stationed on site as there is no office at the entrance. It costs 30 cedis per person for this hike.

Fun Fact.

I asked the tour guide to take pictures and videos for me. we thought all was well till we got back to our hotel. Most of them had his finger in the shot and they were foggy. As he had our phone in hand, he kept touching the camera and we had bad images and videos. It was heartbreaking to watch.
